Announcing the 2024 HRC/Freilich Fellow

Congratulations to Professor Malcolm Campbell from the University of Auckland for being awarded the HRC/Freilich Fellowship!

Malcolm's research focuses on the histories of Australia and Ireland, and on global Irish migration. His project, Bigotry: An Australian History, investigates the rise and persistence of bigotry in Australia since 1788. The project seeks to outline the historical experience of bigotry in Australia, and how this has changed over time. It takes particular focus on First Nations peoples, the Irish, indentured labourers from the Pacific Islands, peoples of Asian birth or descent, and non-British immigrants in the decades following the Second World War.

Malcolm is a Professor of History and has been the Head of Humanities at the University of Auckland since 2014. He has published three books, the most recent of which is Ireland's Farthest Shores: Mobility, Migration and Settlement in the Pacific World

The Fellowship brings Australian and internationally recognised researchers to the ANU for an opportunity to contribute to relevant research activities, present and disseminate their work, and engage in scholarly exchange with other academics in their field of study. The HRC-Freilich Fellow will deliver a public lecture in 2023.
